Our Church History
In the summer of 1938, a group of women met in a Garden City home to form a Missionary Circle sponsored by the Bull Street Baptist Church. From this humble beginning the First Baptist Church of Garden City was constituted in December 1940. As our membership grew, new buildings and properties were added. We have a sanctuary that seats 600, renovated Children’s Building and Fellowship Hall/Education Building, a Senior Adult Building, and a Youth special activities building. For over seventy years the First Baptist Church family has been working to make a difference in our world and community through sharing God’s love. Helping people find love, comfort, and security are some of the ways that we positively affect Garden City and the Chatham/Effingham areas. First Baptist Church is a place where families are made stronger and better, parents become better parents, children become better children, and marital bonds are tied and knitted together for a lifetime.
“Committed to people” describes our ministers and staff, our church leaders, and our congregation. We are proud to be a part of a group of people who are doing something big for God and our world. God has trusted us with the message that can change the world and bring enduring hope to the heart of men. We invite you to join us in worship as we carry out God’s plan for our lives.
Ministry to all ages—from preschoolers to senior adults—is provided through Sunday School and the regular church services, as well as our mission organizations and age graded activities. A nursery is provided for Sunday and Wednesday services, plus Preschool Church is open to all 4 and 5 year olds during the morning worship service.
